The Republic of Liberia is a state in West Africa. It borders C te d'Ivoire, Guinea and Sierra Leone, and is washed west by the Atlantic Ocean.
The climate of the country is warm equatorial and most of the rains fall in summer. The Coast of Piperio consists of long-lived forests.
In the interior there are savannas, where carnivores live and in the forest live lemurs, chimpanzees, snakes and mongooses. Since 1989, Liberia has experienced two civil wars.
the first (19891996) and the second (19992003), which had the effect of destroying the state economy and creating a wave of refugees in other African countries. The president of the country is Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, who became the first woman in history to be elected President of an African state.
The name of the country means "freedom" and refers to the freed slaves, who settled in Liberia in 1822 and founded the state in 1847 with the support of the US government. They thus created a new ethnic group, the American-Liberians.
However, the introduction of this ethnic group sparked tensions with the 16 other major ethnic groups.
Liberia is located in West Africa and borders the North Atlantic Ocean to the southwest. Essentially the state territory consists of a coastal strip from the Manos River in the west to Kavalos in the east.
This strip corresponds to the Coast of Pepper (so it was called during the colonial period). Behind this strip, inland is a zone of low hills, which gradually rise to 1,700 meters (in the Nimba Mountains, on the border with Guinea).
The highest point in the country is Mount Guteve at 1,440 meters. The highest, at an altitude of 1,752 m, is Mount Nimba, which (geographically) belongs to both Guinea and Ivory Coast.
Its coast is battered and plagued by storms.
Liberia's climate is typical of the countries of the Gulf of Guinea. This means that monsoons affect the rainfall, which is more from May to October.
The dry season follows. Between December and March the harmatan (dry) winds reduce the humidity. The temperature during the rainy season is 24-25 degrees Celsius, while during the dry season it ranges from 26 to 30 degrees Celsius.
The temperature does not show a significant change during the day and night comparatively. The country is the rainiest in the Gulf of Guinea.
